AWSA is investigating light ropes and greating rules for their B1, B2, G1, G2 divisions (B3,G3 is IWWF Junior).  Based on what Masterline is making, here is what they have:
Light/Jr Rope:  5 mm (approx. 3/16”) Poly-Pro 8 strand (40 Yarns per strand) that can be used up to 35 off only, the tension load is approx. 1,000# which should be used for B1, G1 only and in Class C or E only.

Intermediate/Mid Jr Rope:  8 mm (approx. 5/16”) 12 Strand (40 Yarns per strand) that can be used up to 38 off only, the tension load is approx. 1,500# which can be used for B1, B2, G1, G2, W6 only in Class C or E.  (Currently do not have anything in IWWF allowing this rope to be used in Class L)

Standard Slalom Rope: 12mm, 10 mm (approx. 3/8”) 16 strand (40 Yarns per strand).  All rope length and the specification meets AWSA/IWWF rules and can be used for all divisions and classes.

Note that the "Standard" is 16 strand/40 yarns.  IWWF Rules call for 12 strands of 60 yarns.  Now IWWF Rules in this area have not changed in many years.  I am not sure when AWSA Rules began to differ, but it probably reflects what is being made and available more accurately than IWWF rules which are probably outdated.
AWSA is doing a survey of the major rope manufacturers of what materials they make available.
When we have  that information, we can look to having an updated specification.  We probably should just specify minimum breaking strength, elongation, and weight per meter.  We did accept the heavier 80 strand ropes as meeting the minimum 60 strand specification when they came on the market.

Larry Gisler comments: I think the small and intermediate rope can be use, in L or R tournaments ,for light skier , under 13 or under 14 .
 I\'m not so sure for senior 4 .

Hanifah Yoong Yin Fah comments: We are using these \"Light\" 5mm ropes and they are really good for 18kg up to 35kg in body weight of skiers. Have not tried the \"Intermediate\" 8mm ropes yet but can imagine will be good for 35kg to 45kg in body weight skiers. I think we should hologate all 3 ropes Light/Intermediate/Standard ropes for skiers to choose whatever so long as they are limited by their body weights as described in my post here. In Asia we have really light weight much smaller skiers. These ropes help them in not dragging on the top of boat wakes.

Nigel Talamo comments: I agree that all the specifications need updating. I have seen the advantage that light ropes bring to small kids who otherwise wouldn\'t be able to slalom at all. I agree with Hanifah that they should be allowed for kids, up to certain body weights.

Dimos Alexopoulos comments: I also agree with lighter ropes for kids. The new rule should specifie wich skiers can use it (by age or by weigth)

Brian Woolley comments: Whilst we all seem to recognise the advantage of light ropes for light skiers, we have to remember that in the World Rules we only have Open, U21 and U17. This may need to wait till the introduction of U14 or similar at the world level to find a home.
